Programs : Focus on Faith

Focus on Faith ~ Strong Academics ~ Spirit of Innovation ~ Welcoming Community

Faith is at the core of what we do in preparing our students for life. We are connected to an active and supportive parish and benefit from the ability to weave our Catholic values into everyday life. The value of our Catholic tradition is evident in every classroom and every student’s experience each day. In many of these areas, life-long memories are created. Some of the students’ favorite annual traditions include the Blessing of the Pets, the FunFest weekend carnival, Grandparents Day, spirit rallies, the Halloween Parade, Mission Fun Day, the book faire, the Family Golf Tournament, the Penny Challenge, the Student Talent Show, the Kindergarten and Eighth Grade Graduations, and Family Groups.

Daily Student Assembly and Prayer: We begin each day with a gathering of the whole school for student-led prayer, the Peace Builders Pledge, the Pledge of Allegiance, and daily announcements that inform, build community, recognize students and provide leadership opportunities.

Student Service: Students in all grades engage in age-appropriate community service by providing special art projects to the elderly, collecting food and clothing for St. Lucy Parish Outreach and other local community organizations, supporting local and global organizations (such as Heifer International and the American Red Cross) through the Penny Challenge, and volunteering at community service organizations and centers (such as Sacred Heart Community Services).

Retreats: In 2008-2009, the retreat program was expanded to include a second 8th grade retreat, and add retreats in the 6th and 7th grades. Students look forward to these lively and engaging experiences, where they focus on exploring and developing their faith and building community.

School Masses: Students participate in planning and participating in school masses one or more times per month. The school community recognizes and celebrates various days throughout the liturgical calendar.

Sacramental Preparation: Our second grade religion program prepares the children to celebrate the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Students in grades 3-8 participate in Reconciliation at Advent and Lent.

Altar Serving: Students in fifth grade are trained as altar servers, and continue to serve at daily and weekend mass through their eighth grade year.

Family Groups: Each student belongs to a Family Group composed of one student from each grade level, with the eighth grader serving as the head of the Family. The Family Groups meet monthly, with different students taking turns leading the group in opening and closing prayers, guided reflections and questions related to the school’s monthly theme, and a group activity. Students look forward to Family Group day with great enthusiasm. Another benefit is that students know each other and feel more connected across the grade levels.

Monthly Family Masses: Monthly student-planned Family Masses are celebrated by the entire parish at specially designated 9:00 a.m. Sunday masses.

Formal Religion Curriculum: Religious instruction is a core subject. Using formal texts and supplemental print and web resources, religion classes emphasize family life, social justice, and Christian service. In all classes, Gospel values are a central theme.
