We
provide a curriculum that is challenging and values based.
Our
academic program includes the following elements:
-
St. Lucy School follows the Core Curriculum standards approved by the State of California.
-
Language
Arts instruction features the comprehensive Step up to Writing
program. Students publish their work through the student literary
magazine “The Bolt,” which is edited and produced by the students,
and accepts submissions of original poetry and prose by students in
all grade levels. In addition, the students publish a quarterly
newspaper that includes articles, interviews, games, cartoons and
opinion pieces.
-
Science
classes are taught in the state-of-the-art science lab classroom.
Students explore the subject through hands-on activities, labs,
projects, and research. Sixth graders attend the annual science camp
at Walden West, and the eighth graders participate in an annual
Science Faire.
-
Mathematics
instruction is tightly coordinated across grade levels. Our math
program includes Geometry, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. In the upper
grades, math classes are broken into smaller halves to promote a low
student-teacher ratio and differentiate instruction.
-
Social
Studies classes integrate literature, religious studies, technology,
and art projects as students examine history through multiple lenses.
-
Religious
education includes daily prayer as a school community and in
classrooms, sacramental preparation, preparation of and participation
in school masses and prayer services, altar serving, retreats in each
junior high grade, Family Groups, and community service projects
through Campus Ministry. An annual theme is integrated into each of
these areas throughout the school day. The 2008-2009 theme is “Shine
your Light.”
-
Computer
education and technology permeate the campus through a curriculum that
focuses on computer literacy and on-line research, supported by a lab
featuring over 40 iMac computers, digital document cameras in every
classroom, and a fully wireless campus.
-
Art
classes in grades K-8 that are integrated with other subjects and
include a focus on the use of various art media, art appreciation, and
art history. There is an annual Spring art show.
-
Music
classes are offered for grades K-5, as well as a children’s choir and parish
choir. Students learn three-part harmony, play recorders and
Boomwhackers, and participate in several school concerts as well as
the annual Diocesan Choral Festival.
-
Spanish
is taught in grades 6 - 8.
-
Physical
education is taught in grades K-8. The emphasis is on basic skills,
movement, fair play, and healthy exercise.
-
The
PeaceBuilders program promotes healthy problem-solving, good
communication skills, and a positive, bully-free environment.
Pre-Kindergarten

Students
will learn and play together within a comprehensive curriculum that
includes concepts of language arts, math, science, and creative arts.

The
Junior High Advisory Program was developed to allow students in groups
of 4 or 5 to meet with a faculty advisor on a monthly basis to discuss
topics related to these years of rapid social and academic growth.
-
We
offer the most extensive co-curricular program in our diocese, and we
encourage our students to explore their interests by bringing forward
their ideas for new clubs and activities.
-
Reading
comprehension is supported through the LitMasters program for students
in the junior high who need additional support in this area. The
learning specialist continues to work with students, teachers, and
parents on individual learning plans as needed.
