Programs : Academics

Focus on Faith ~ Strong Academics ~ Spirit of Innovation ~ Welcoming Community

We provide a curriculum that is challenging and values based.

Our academic program includes the following elements:

  • St. Lucy School follows the Core Curriculum standards approved by the State of California.

  • Language Arts instruction features the comprehensive Step up to Writing program. Students publish their work through the student literary magazine “The Bolt,” which is edited and produced by the students, and accepts submissions of original poetry and prose by students in all grade levels. In addition, the students publish a quarterly newspaper that includes articles, interviews, games, cartoons and opinion pieces.

  • Science classes are taught in the state-of-the-art science lab classroom. Students explore the subject through hands-on activities, labs, projects, and research. Sixth graders attend the annual science camp at Walden West, and the eighth graders participate in an annual Science Faire.

  • Mathematics instruction is tightly coordinated across grade levels. Our math program includes Geometry, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. In the upper grades, math classes are broken into smaller halves to promote a low student-teacher ratio and differentiate instruction.

  • Social Studies classes integrate literature, religious studies, technology, and art projects as students examine history through multiple lenses.

  • Religious education includes daily prayer as a school community and in classrooms, sacramental preparation, preparation of and participation in school masses and prayer services, altar serving, retreats in each junior high grade, Family Groups, and community service projects through Campus Ministry. An annual theme is integrated into each of these areas throughout the school day. The 2008-2009 theme is “Shine your Light.”

  • Computer education and technology permeate the campus through a curriculum that focuses on computer literacy and on-line research, supported by a lab featuring over 40 iMac computers, digital document cameras in every classroom, and a fully wireless campus.

  • Art classes in grades K-8 that are integrated with other subjects and include a focus on the use of various art media, art appreciation, and art history. There is an annual Spring art show.

  • Music classes are offered for grades K-5, as well as a children’s choir and parish choir. Students learn three-part harmony, play recorders and Boomwhackers, and participate in several school concerts as well as the annual Diocesan Choral Festival.

  • Spanish is taught in grades 6 - 8.

  • Physical education is taught in grades K-8. The emphasis is on basic skills, movement, fair play, and healthy exercise.

  • The PeaceBuilders program promotes healthy problem-solving, good communication skills, and a positive, bully-free environment.

Pre-Kindergarten Program

  • Students will learn and play together within a comprehensive curriculum that includes concepts of language arts, math, science, and creative arts.

  • Each day, students will have the opportunity to build relationships, practice self-discipline, and develop both large and small motor skills, all within a strong, cheerful, faith-based school “family.”

  • The purpose of this program is to foster a love of learning in a faith-based environment. Every year, school-wide religious themes will be woven into the age-appropriate comprehensive curriculum including concepts of language arts, math, science, and creative arts.

  • Students will learn how to incorporate spirituality into daily life by experiencing hands-on activities and creating unique projects.

  • Each day, students will have opportunities to build relationships, practice self-discipline, and develop both large and small motor skills all in conjunction with beginning to understand he teachings of Jesus.

Kindergarten Program

  • Kindergarten is a comprehensive half-day program, which offers a teacher-student ratio ranging from 1:4 – 1:6 throughout the day.

  • The comprehensive program includes reading readiness, math foundations and number sense, Spanish, social development, religion, music, computers, library time, science, social studies, and motor skills/physical education.

  • Our Kindergarten teacher brings a wealth of experience into the classroom with over 20 years of teaching at St. Lucy School, and as an alumni parent herself. As the Vice Principal for the Primary Grades, she is an integral part of the school administration.

  • Kindergartners are buddied up with fourth grade buddies, and participate in family groups with the entire school.

  • Field trips and guest speakers round out the curriculum, and include the beloved Thanksgiving Feast and a trip to the Pumpkin Patch, and regular visitors from our community.

  • Parent volunteerism is encouraged, and many opportunities are provided throughout the day.

Elementary Program: Grades 1-5

  • A challenging academic and developmental program is offered to ensure the success of our students.

  • Instructional aides augment the teaching staff in these grades, resulting in a 1:18 ratio.

  • In addition to general academics, our program includes separate instructors for science, computers, library skills, physical education, music, and art.

  • Our second grade religion program prepares the children to celebrate the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

  • All students participate in Family Groups and our buddy program.

  • A dedicated reading specialist is on site and available to work with small groups of students as needed. A learning specialist is also available to liaise with parents and teachers, and support student learning plans.

Jr. High Program: Grades 6-8

  • Our middle school provides a rich program designed to motivate, challenge, and develop the older students as they step from childhood into their teen years.

  • In preparation for high school, study skills, leadership skills, writing, and critical thinking are emphasized in a safe and supportive environment.

  • In addition to our strong academic program, we offer an extensive Spanish program, advanced math for grades 7 and 8, science camp for our 6th graders, and a Science Faire for our 8th graders.

  • Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 attend retreats and participate in community service through the Campus Ministry office.

  • The Junior High Advisory Program was developed to allow students in groups of 4 or 5 to meet with a faculty advisor on a monthly basis to discuss topics related to these years of rapid social and academic growth.

  • We offer the most extensive co-curricular program in our diocese, and we encourage our students to explore their interests by bringing forward their ideas for new clubs and activities.

  • Reading comprehension is supported through the LitMasters program for students in the junior high who need additional support in this area. The learning specialist continues to work with students, teachers, and parents on individual learning plans as needed.
